The Idea

Non-profit companies have a lower barrier to entry than traditional corporations because they are used to taking volunteers and generally have a smaller budget due to funding limitations. Having said that, there are many big non-profits that look impressive in a portfolio and can be a quality signal to your next clients.

Contact the head of the department you’re looking to work for and be up front about your skills, reason for wanting to work with them and value you can offer. Quoting a reduced rate to get a foot in the door should be a short-term strategy since it’s not sustainable. Once you get your first one, you’ll be able to use it as a reference to get a few more.
